Friday, July 31st 2015 was a great day for the South Coast. It marked the celebration of the completion of the Nasketucket Bay Land Conservation Project, a four-year, $6 million initiative to protect over four hundred acres of land on Nasketucket Bay in Fairhaven and Mattapoisett. This initiative is the area’s largest conservation project in the last quarter century. The Nasketucket Bay Land Conservation Project ensures the protection of 190 acres of farmland and the preservation of 226 acres of forests, coastal wetlands, and waterfront, opening these areas to the public for outdoor recreation.
Events at the Nasketucket Bay State Reservation
The Buzzards Bay Coalition, a membership-supported non-profit organization which spearheaded the Nasketucket Bay Conservation Project, is hosting a number of fantastic events as part of their Bay Adventure Series to get everyone out and enjoying wonderful Buzzards Bay.
Bike or Hike the Shaw Farm Trail
The Shaw Farm Trail is a brand new trail that connects the Phoenix Bike Trail in Fairhaven and the Mattapoisett Rail Trail to the Nasketucket Bay State Reservation. The Coalition’s website states, “On this new trail, you can hike between the bike path and Nasketucket Bay’s forests and shoreline. Whether you’re looking for a quick nature walk or a longer hike, Shaw Farm Trail is a beautiful and convenient place to enjoy the outdoors.”
Run The Bogs at the Mattapoisett River Reserve
The Buzzards Bay Coalition is hosting a fun run on the first Friday of every month from May to November. It’s a wonderful chance for runners of all abilities to explore the beautiful trails across the Buzzards Bay watershed.
On Friday, August 7th, join fellow adventurers for the inaugural watershed group trail run through The Bogs, a place the Coalition calls, a “natural oasis located just minutes from Interstate 195 in Mattapoisett. With acres of wild-growing cranberries and rare freshwater wetlands teeming with wildlife, The Bogs invites visitors to discover and explore Buzzards Bay’s unique upland habitats.”
Paddleboard in Nasketucket Bay, Fairhaven
Always wanted to learn to paddleboard? Now’s your chance. The Buzzards Bay Coalition is holding a free paddleboarding workshop this Sunday, August 9th. Get some sun and enjoy some fun, while exercising in the beautiful waters of Nasketucket Bay in Fairhaven.
Explore Penikese Island
On August 29th, the Coalition is leading an exciting full-day excursion to explore Penikese Island, a remote island at the entrance to Buzzards Bay. You will “learn how oysters are farmed nearby, get a tour of Penikese Island School, and explore the shoreline with Coalition education staff.”
