RP Top 10: Public Golf Courses

Whether battling the ocean breezes on a seaside course or driving past a row on pines on a tree-lined fairway, Massachusetts has fabulous offerings for those looking to spend a summer day hitting the links. While there are some tremendous private golf courses, we also have some favorite destinations open to all. Here are our Top 10 public golf courses across Cape Cod, the South Coast and Greater Boston.

Dennis Pines Golf Course | East Dennispublic golf courses

Situated on 170 acres of pine forest land in the Village of East Dennis, Dennis Pines has long been noted as one of the toughest layouts on Cape Cod. Tree lined corridors place a great premium on accuracy rather than distance. Water comes into play on four holes, and the twelfth hole is recognized as one of the most difficult par fives anywhere.

Captains Golf Course | Brewster public golf courses

Captains is a premier facility in Brewster that offers PGA professional available for lessons and clinics. They also feature a fully stocked Pro Shop as well as full restaurant amenities for outings and banquets. The course is conveniently located off the Mid-Cape Highway and is within easy driving distance of Providence and Boston.

Cape Cod Country Club | East Falmouth

On the borders of Coonamessett Pond, Cape Cod Country Club features an interesting layout with a variety of undulating fairways and subtly-sloped greens and plays host the three USGA Massachusetts Opens and the Cape Cod Senior Open golf tournament.

Sandwich Hollows Golf Club | Sandwichpublic golf courses

Featuring majestic views of the Cape Cod Bay to the north from several holes, the golf course is bordered by hundreds of acres of conservation area to the east, west and south. Each hole is unique, isolated from other holes. Playing Sandwich Hollows evokes images of the quiet solitude of great golf in Vermont or New Hampshire.

Highland Links Golf Course | Truro

Founded in 1892, Highland Links Golf Course has celebrated over a century of golf and is heralded as Cape Cod’s oldest golf course. Sticking to it’s Scottish roots, Highland Links is as close to the Scottish tradition found anywhere in the eastern United States.

William J. Devine Golf Course | Dorchester

William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park was established October 26, 1896 and is the second oldest public golf course in the nation and has been rated by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play.

Newton Commonwealth Golf Course | Newtonpublic golf courses

Newton Commonwealth Golf Course is an exceptionally groomed course located just minutes from downtown Boston. It offers a short, but challenging round of golf featuring quick greens and relatively narrow fairways.

ForeKicks Golf Course | Norfolk

Their links style fully lighted executive golf course is a 9 hole course with holes ranging from 80 to 160 yards. Want to practice in bad weather? Head inside to the all weather driving range, 9 hole putting green and more.

Squirrel Run Golf Course | Plymouth public golf courses

Ranked by Golf Advisor as one of the Top 25 U.S. Courses for value, Squirrel Run offers a great value starting at $22 during the weekdays.

Marion Golf Club | Marion

Marion Golf Course, established 1904, is a classic George Thomas design. A public 9 hole golf course winding through farmland; complete with original stone walls and beautiful views of Sippican Harbor.
