Community Profile: Ned’s Point Lighthouse

Built 180 years ago, Ned’s Point Light is a historic lighthouse and fixture of the Mattapoisett community.

Ned’s Point Lighthouse

Named after a local farmer, Ned Dexter, the 35-foot lighthouse was constructed with locally sourced stone and a bird-cage style lantern. Ned’s Point was put up for sale after being deactivated in 1952. The town of Mattapoisett purchased the land in 1958, which it developed into a park while The Coast Guard retained ownership of the lighthouse.

In 1961, the Lighthouse became active again and has remained active ever since. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

The park, known officially as “Veterans of Mattapoisett Memorial Park”, is a great place to swim, go kayaking or enjoy a picnic with the family. Take in a panoramic view of the harbor, Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod, and the Elizabeth Islands. The park grounds remain open to the public daily but tours, which  started in 2009, are currently not available due to scheduled repairs.
