What connects Law & Order actor and Supreme Court Justice?

What do Law & Order’s Sam Waterston and former Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes have in common? No, it’s not that they both spent a lot of time in the courtroom. Although they did… if you count the TV courtroom. And while it’s true that both men are Ivy-league educated (Holmes at Harvard, Waterston at Yale) that’s not the connection that binds them either. What they actually share is that both men made, for at least part of their lives, their homes in Mattapoisett.

Holmes and his wife were summer residents of Mattapoisett for fifteen years starting in 1873 until the house burned to the ground in a brush fire. Waterston, who was born 5 years after Holmes died, purchased a home here with his wife in 2008.

It’s not tough to figure out what attracted both men to the area. Mattapoisett is a small seaside community great for fishing, sailing, eating at a waterfront restaurant, or enjoying a concert at Shipyard Park. For cycling enthusiasts, a new bike path is in place which, upon completion, will connect Providence to Provincetown. Not falling in love with Mattapoisett might be considered by its famous residents a “crime”.
