Purchased in 1819, 545 Old Harbor Road was the home to Joel Sparrow, a 22-year-old veteran of the war of 1812. Having moved from Orleans to Chatham, Joe served the townspeople as coffin maker and cobbler for sixty years. The home continued to be passed down and purchased by townspeople, including Hezekiah Doane, who purchased the coffin maker’s house in 1913 and was the keeper of the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station from 1898-1915. Following Doane’s ownership, he passed it down to his son, who later sold the home to A. Burns Smythe. As one of Chatham’s first developers, Smythe created Harbor Coves in 1947. He made a number of changes to the home and property, including building a garage and workshop, moving the original barn to the rear lot, and subdividing the original six-acres into two parcels. During the late 1900s, the home was purchased by Earl F. Hiscock, a naval architect and inventor, and his wife Alice.

Fast forward to the present day and the home is on the market again. Uniquely designed with two separate living areas connected by a common foyer, the home can fit a large amount of family or friends, with plenty of privacy and seclusion. Bright, light, and airy, the home’s close proximity to the beach is echoed in the nautical and old-fashioned feel of the house. With natural light pouring in from the numerous windows, the home feels warm and inviting, all year round.
