Welcome Shark Week 2023! 48 years ago, Steven Spielberg traveled to Martha’s Vineyard to begin production on the film that would scare away a generation on beachgoers from the water: Jaws. Today, the fascination with sharks on Cape Cod remains as strong as ever. We put together some ways you can enjoy this majestic sea creature this Summer.
Sharks on Cape Cod
Whether you regularly binge watch Shark Week or only have a rudimentary knowledge of the finned fish of the sea, Cape Cod has many organizations and opportunities dedicated to the education and interactive experience of sharks.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) was established to support white shark research and education programs to ensure that this important species thrive. They work directly with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries to support current and long term white shark research projects.
AWSC is home to the Chatham Shark Center which offers interactive exhibits, videos, displays, and virtual reality experiences.
With ten years of experience, Cape Cod Shark Adventures provides novice and experienced divers alike a world class day of adventure on the water. Whether you are a professional looking for photographs or a beginner looking to get in the cage, they make sure you get as much out of the day as possible. Cape Cod Shark Adventures was founded in 2010 by coast guard licensed Captain Bryce Rohrer. More information on cage dives, open water dives and shark viewing can be found here.
Enjoy a Great White shark tour accompanied by a professional shark spotter plane which includes two hours on the boat with two hours of spotter airplane flight time. They have the ability to communicate live and privately with the plane to put you right on the sharks.
Enjoy a private tour for up to 7 people as you enjoy an exclusive tour from Matt Taylor, author of Jaws: Memories from Martha’s Vineyard. Be picked up anywhere on the Vineyard and enjoy a fact-filled tour. You will have access to many of the films’ locations. You will hear non-published stories about the filming, the actors, as well as being able to stop for photos. The Jaws bridge is one of the top attractions on the island and your guide has beach towels in the van if anyone wants to jump in!
